Gravitational biology of the cell

In the recent years emerged and formed the independent scientific discipline called space biology. Being an integral part of gravitational biology, it was designed to play an important role in identifying and understanding the role of gravity in the evolution of living systems on Earth. The book is the result of years of work of the author in the field of gravitational and space biology. It includes the results of experimental studies, some assumptions and hypotheses formulated based on the analysis of these results, the literature data and current state of the problem.

Molecular and cellular fundamentals of gravitational sensitivity

The book is dedicated to one of the relevant problems of gravitational and space biology – molecular and cellular basis of the sensitivity of living systems to changes in the magnitude and direction of the gravity vector. Based on critical analysis of a large array of experimental data and theoretical provisions laws of functioning of different cell types and cellular associations in altered gravity, including microgravity are formulated.

Medical-biological effects of ionizing radiation

Ionizing radiation, exists in nature, create environmental radiation background, which is composed of external and internal radiation sources. The main internal source of ionizing radiation of natural origin are radioactive isotopes. In addition, there are artificial sources of ionizing radiation arising from human activities related to the use of nuclear technology in national economic and military purposes. The category of external sources of radiation include cosmic rays and the products they cause by nuclear reactions with the atoms of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Ionizing radiation is an integral factor of the environment, existing throughout biological evolution. Therefore, the entire biosphere including microorganisms, plants, animals and man, are constantly under the influence of natural background radiation. Recently, however, have arisen and may again arise a situations where the natural background radiation may be exceeded in the hundreds and even thousands of times, for example, when the use of nuclear weapons in time of war or terrorist attacks, as the result of technological disasters, accidents on NPP or other special objects. The book examines the mechanisms and effects of influence of high levels of ionizing radiation on biological systems.

Physico-chemical processes in biological systems

The basis of this book is the course of lectures given to students of Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in 1999 and 2000 within the study program “Medical physics”, carried out by Institute of Biomedical Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences (IBMP RAS) in cooperation with the MEPhI Department of Experimental Methods in Nuclear Physics. The book is intended for physics students and graduate students specializing in biological and medical physics.
